What is eyelash stretching
Stretching, or eyelash stretching, is an English term. Stretch, stretch is a cosmetic procedure that uses specific compounds to give the appearance of longer, more curly eyelashes.
Since stretching is the foundation of the process, it is referred to as improved eyelash lamination. The compositions used in the process and the outcome are where the differences lie.
Extending
- Provides a lifting effect, that is, it allows you to stretch the hairs and make them visually a little longer. An expressive result will be obtained if you combine stretching with coloring – this will darken the tips of the eyelashes and thereby add a little visual length to them;
- Curls eyelashes from the root. The look becomes wide open, and the eyes look brighter;
- Makes the hairs obedient, prevents them from tangling and creasing;
- Strengthens the eyelashes due to the useful components included in the composition.
Benefits of extending:
- The result lasts up to 3 months. The decisive factor determining the wearing period will be the rate of eyelash renewal. If the eyelashes are renewed frequently, then the wearing time is reduced;
- Stretching is not afraid of water – you can wet your eyes as soon as you get up from the master"s couch;
- The result is preserved even after mechanical action – sleeping face down in a pillow or friction;
- Stretching compositions include more useful components in comparison with lamination or Botox, which reduces the negative impact of chemical components and helps not only in the visual, but also in the internal transformation of eyelashes.
The drawbacks of stretching
- As they grow, the styled eyelashes can lose their attractiveness. When the hair grows, it stops controlling the direction of the eyelash, which means it can change direction and stick out. This does not always happen, but there is a possibility;
- New eyelashes that will grow after the procedure will not fit into the ideal styling and the eyelash edge will look disordered;
- No matter how rich in useful components the compositions are, stretching remains a procedure using fairly aggressive chemical solutions, which, if used incorrectly, can harm the quality of the eyelashes;
- If the eyelashes are naturally short – there will be no WOW effect. The hairs will become a little more expressive, but will be far from the effect of extensions. This applies to all similar procedures for eyelashes.
Not every girl will experience the procedure’s drawbacks because they are highly conditional. Most of the time, the effects of stretching become less noticeable before issues with creases or other hair growth start.
Stretching and lamination: what is the difference
- Compositions. Stretching products include more useful components. Manufacturers of the compositions claim that the difference is huge – 40% versus 5% in lamination. It is difficult to say how true such statements are, but there are really more nutritional and moisturizing ingredients in stretching products – this is evidenced by the composition of the products;
- Stages. Additional products are used for stretching – a softener or Softner and Fixage. Lamination uses a hair loosener and fixer;
- Result. Stretching is aimed at giving the eyelashes an expressive bend – the hairs seem to be stretched and laid in the desired position. Curling comes from the root. Lamination gives only a slight curl;
- Time. With modern stretching compounds, the procedure can be done 2 times faster, but the shorter the exposure time, the less pronounced the result will be;
- Price. Stretching is more expensive than lamination.
Notwithstanding the long list of distinctions, there isn’t much of a visual distinction between stretching and lamination in terms of the outcome.
Regarding the additional processes:
- Bio-curling of eyelashes aimed at curling. The compounds are quite aggressive and usually lack useful components, that is, the effect of chemical ingredients is not compensated for by anything;
- Botox compacts and thickens eyelashes. Curling and bending are not the final goal of the procedure. Botox is often done as one of the stages of stretching, which allows you to simultaneously compact, stretch and curl the hairs;
- Velvet for eyelashes is aimed at working in the deep layers of hair. The components of the composition penetrate into the deep layers and even reach the hair follicles, activating their work and accelerating the growth of new hairs.
Regardless of the type of lash procedure—lamination, stretching, or botox—all follow a similar protocol and involve roughly the same steps. They can all be viewed as equivalents since they precisely substitute one another while producing somewhat different outcomes.
The intended outcome will determine whether stretching, lamination, or another process is best:
- Curled eyelashes from the root – stretching;
- Restoration and growth – velvet;
- Slight bending and thickening effect – botox;
- A budget procedure for transforming eyelashes without a wow effect – lamination;
- Giving a bend, but with the risk of damaging the hairs – bio-curling.
Use of stretching products and their compositions
Step 0. Fixing eyelashes
Glue is applied freely prior to composition application, helping to secure the eyelashes on the roller and guarantee their fixed position during the process.
The adhesive includes:
- Water;
- Polyvinyl alcohol;
- Glycerin;
- Acrylates/Steareth-30 Methacrylate Copolymer – emulsifier;
- Waterproofed castor oil;
- Methylparaben.
The glue composition is standard; eyelash lamination uses similar glue components.
Step 1. Breaking powder
Ammonium thioglycolate is the active component in this product. This material enters the hair and shatters sulfide bonds. Hair that has been exposed to ammonium thioglycolate is prone to bending.
Included in the composition as well:
- Water – the basis of the product;
- Cetearyl alcohol;
- Benzyl alcohol;
- Ethanolamine;
- Benzyl benzoate;
- Polyquaternium.
Step 2. Restoration and fixation
Sodium bromate, sometimes known as sodium bromate, is the product’s primary active ingredient. This oxidizer repairs keratin chains that were broken during the initial phase. The hair thus regains its strength, albeit in a new form determined by the master.
Among the items in the second stage are also:
- Water;
- Benzyl benzoate;
- Cetearyl alcohol;
- Benzyl alcohol;
- Steartrimonium – surfactant, surfactant.
Step 3. Nutrition
Propylene glycol is the only chemical component in the third product, Fixage, despite the fact that the primary fixation of hair in its original state takes place at the previous stage. Fixage is made from beneficial ingredients that also provide moisture, shine, and nourishment to the hairs on the lashes and eyebrows.
The third-step products’ ingredients could consist of the following:
- Water enriched with oils and extracts – orange, rose;
- Oils – rosewood, grapefruit, jojoba;
- Almond milk;
- Keratin;
- Vitamins and minerals;
- Amino acids.
Softener
A product called softener or softner is used to degrease eyelashes and remove extra products before stretching them. helps the penetration of beneficial components and aids in the painless removal of the roller and glue particles. It is optional but is used at various points in the process.
Using a product from the Lamioner brand as an example, we will discuss the softener’s composition:
- Water;
- Glycerin;
- Thistle extract;
- Sodium laureth carboxylate – surfactant, helps dissolve dirt, helps remove oiliness;
- Laureth – surfactant;
- Water-soluble peach oil;
- Magnesium laureth sulfate – surfactant;
- Calendula extract;
- Colloidal silver – preservative;
- Hyaluronic acid.
During the procedure, a specific eyelash shampoo can also be used; this helps to clean the lashes so that no glue or dirt particles remain on them, which frequently causes eyelids to stick together.
Stretching compositions and lamination compositions can be substituted because the former have a significantly higher amount of beneficial ingredients—enriched water, oils, extracts, and moisturizers are all actively used.
How the stretching procedure is carried out
Stretching involves the same alternating application of compounds and brief exposure to the hairs as lamination or botox for eyelashes. The quantity and make-up of the preparations utilized differ the most.
How to stretch eyelashes:
- Eyelashes are prepared: cosmetics and dirt are removed, the surface of the hairs is degreased;
- The lower eyelashes are isolated with a patch;
- A roller is placed along the growth line of the upper eyelashes. The roller is selected based on the length of the eyelashes, the shape of the eyes and the desired curl of the future eyelashes;
- Eyelashes are fixed on the roller – each hair is tightly placed on the lining. All eyelashes lie strictly parallel to each other, without overlaps and bends. The way the eyelashes are laid out directly affects the result of stretching. For additional fixation at this stage, you can use special glue;
- The first composition is applied to the eyelashes. It is responsible for loosening the hairs – they become soft and pliable. The holding time depends on the manufacturer and the composition of the product and can range from 3 to 15 minutes;
- The remains of the product are removed from the eyelashes. If the stretching procedure is combined with eyelash dyeing, at this stage the eyelash dye is applied – Levissime, Bronsun, Thuya, and held according to the instructions, after which it is removed;
- The second composition is applied – it will restore the bonds inside the hair and help fix it in the bend that the roller gave it. The holding time ranges from 3 to 15 minutes;
- The fixer is applied last – a nourishing agent that nourishes the hairs, and also provides additional fixation of the result.
In order to achieve the effect of increasing density, you can also incorporate eyelash botox into the stretching procedure. This will help make the hairs denser.
Side effects and contraindications
The following conditions preclude eyelash stretching:
- Menstruation and unstable hormonal background;
- Eye diseases in the acute stage;
- Individual intolerance to the components of the products – before the first procedure, it is recommended to do an allergy test;
- Recently performed operations in the eye area.
In addition to contraindications, review the list of side effects prior to seeing the master:
- Deterioration in the quality of eyelashes. Stretching compositions are more delicate than for classic lamination, but still include quite aggressive components. Ammonium thioglycolate, for example, if overexposed, can burn hairs;
- Formation of creases. When the eyelash grows, the bending point shifts and no longer has a support point. As a result, the hair can bend in any direction, and also provoke creases in natural eyelashes. This is rare, but it happens.
Eyebrow stretching
Eyebrows can also be stretched; the steps remain the same except that rollers will not be used. The goal of the eyebrow procedure, in contrast to eyelash stretching, is to tame hard, unruly hairs rather than curl them.
Following the stretching of the eyebrows:
- There is no need to use eyebrow styling products – gels, waxes, soap. Eyebrows become obedient and hold a given direction for 2-3 months;
- Soft and thin hairs will become a little stronger and will be nourished with useful components of the compositions;
- Hairs become shiny, the color is enhanced, especially if you combine stretching with dyeing.
Questions
After stretching, how should eyelashes be maintained?
After stretching, there are hardly any limitations. Although you can wet them right away, it is preferable to wait a few hours for the compositions to fix and soak the hairs.
It is advised to use a brush to comb the lashes while they are on to preserve their tidy appearance and prevent wrinkles or premature hair loss. Experts also recommend against using tongs or curlers on your eyelashes.
What is the price of eyelash stretching?
The procedure’s cost is determined by the expert’s level and place of residence. A session typically costs between 1,500 and 3,000 rubles.
How can I stretch my eyelashes at home?
It is not advised that you perform the surgery on yourself. Self-lash stretching is inconvenient and risky; a lack of understanding of the nuances and technology can have unanticipated results.
Where can I train to stretch my eyelashes?
Maria Kotova, the creator of the first stretching compositions and the founder of the Lamioner brand, teaches using the author’s method. Both individual and group training is offered. Online courses are another option.
Which size roller should I use to stretch?
The length of the lashes, the fit of the eyes, and the desired curl type are taken into consideration when choosing the roller. M and M2 rollers are the most popular types.
Where can I purchase products for stretching?
There is currently just one brand of stretching products available: Lamioner. These products were created especially for this procedure.
What is the duration of the stretching process?
The process usually takes forty to sixty minutes, depending on the lashmaker’s skill level as well as the initial state and quality of the lashes.
