Choosing eyebrow brushes

The correct tools can make all the difference when it comes to eyebrow perfection.

It’s important to select an eyebrow brush that meets your unique requirements when shaping, filling, or grooming your brows. With the correct brush, you can achieve precise, natural-looking results that will give your brows a polished, well-defined appearance. Knowing the various kinds of eyebrow brushes and how they work will help you choose the best tool to improve your eyebrow routine.

Types of brushes

First, let’s discuss the necessity of an eyebrow brush.

In the realm of professional eyebrow artists, brushes are the primary tool used for applying paste and concealer as well as for coloring eyebrows with henna or paint. When applying and blending eyeshadow, lipstick, brow pencil, and other makeup, a brush is utilized.

Traditionally, eyebrow brushes fall into one of three categories:

  • beveled. The bristles are cut at an angle so that one corner is sharp and the other is blunt;
  • straight – bristles in the shape of a square or rectangle;
  • flat rounded. Made of soft hairs with a slightly rounded edge.

We use rounded tools to apply dry makeup, like eyeshadow. They are too soft for things like paint or henna. Beveled brushes are used by brow artists for coloring eyebrows, while straight brushes are used for applying paste or concealer.

Beveled and straight brushes can be:

  • short;
  • medium and long.
  1. Short ones are convenient for drawing the contour – under pressure, the hairs practically do not bend, which allows you to create even and clear lines.
  2. Medium and long ones are good for shading the cavity of the future eyebrow, as well as shading the dye.

After that, we’ll talk more about beveled and straight brushes, though most of the content is relevant to any brush used for eyebrows. Write a question in the comments section if you’d like more information about rounded ones, and we’ll do our best to assist you.

Classification by bristle material

By origin, all brushes are separated into two categories:

  • natural – made from animal wool;
  • synthetic – made from artificial materials.

The wool of twelve different animals can be used to make natural ones, but these are typically:

  • squirrel – soft and elastic bristles;
  • sable – elastic hairs;
  • goat – hard hair with a slight wave;
  • pony – thick hair.

Additionally, there are brushes made of raccoon, marten, fox, and kolinsky. The structure of the hairs, which differ in thickness at the base and tip, is what makes natural brushes unique. Because the middle and lower hair sections are thicker than the rest of the hair, the main part feels smooth to the touch and does not "walk." Working with natural brushes is challenging for brow masters because the tiny hair scales absorb the dye. The pile consequently rapidly loses its "marketable" appearance.

The materials used to make synthetic brushes are synthetic. There is a long list of potential raw materials.

The most prevalent man-made materials are:

The distinctive feature of synthetic hair is that it lacks scales that would cause the color to bleed, giving it a uniform, smooth structure. For this reason, paint and henna dyeing are done on synthetic materials.

Different handle materials are used in the production of all brushes, synthetic and natural. Plastic, acrylic, and wood tools are available for brow artists. Make your choice based on your personal preferences, but never forget to clean the brush after every use. Low-quality plastic and wooden handles can react poorly to the solution, deform, and lose their aesthetic appeal from the outside.

How to choose

  • hardness and length of the bristle part. This determines how flexible the brush will be – the longer the hairs, the more difficult it is to "control" it. Here, the purpose of the brush should be an important argument – beveled ones with medium and long bristles are suitable for shading, and ones with short bristles are suitable for borders;
  • origin. Here, look at your own feelings. There are hairdressers who love natural hair, even despite the peculiarity of its structure;
  • handle. Rely on your own comfort and the quality of the handle material – you will have to disinfect the tool every day. If the handle is wooden, it is better if it is covered with enamel or varnish. Look at how the handle is connected to the working part – gently move the place of closing. If you see even the smallest movements, then it is better to refuse to buy;
  • density and quality of stuffing. Grab the bristles with your fingers and pull them slightly – there should be no fallen hairs left in your hands. Also check that the brush is tightly packed – a high-quality tool does not have "bald spots" and the hairs lie one to one. Gather the hairs in the center and look at the place where they fit to the edge – if there are gaps, then the stuffing is bad;
  • evenness of the cut. For beveled and straight brushes, this is one of the most important criteria – the evenness of the cut determines the accuracy of the work. There should be no protruding hairs or, conversely, too short.
  • manufacturer. As with buying tweezers, buy brushes only from trusted manufacturers so that there are no problems with the stuffing, fastening of the handle and the quality of the bristles. We have made a selection of the best below.

Answers to questions

Can an artistic brush be used in place of a cosmetic one?

Since artistic brushes are used by many masters, you should use them if they are more practical and profitable for you.

What is the right way to clean brushes? I’ve read that treating them with a spray bottle full of alcohol solution is sufficient.

We mentioned in passing in the article that brushes must be regularly disinfected by soaking in a solution of disinfectant. Make sure to read our article on the hygienic practices in the eyebrow artist’s office for more information on this topic. If you use brushes only for yourself and at home, a little alcohol spray will do the trick.
