We’ll go through each of the necessary hairdressing tools in this guide, defining terms and outlining applications. This directory will provide you with the knowledge you require to become acquainted with the fundamentals, regardless of whether you’re an aspiring stylist or someone who wants to perfect their hair regimen.

Understanding the function of each tool will streamline, optimize, and—above all—enjoy your hair care routine. So let’s explore the world of hairdressing tools and how they all add to the skill of hair styling.

Types of hairdressing tools

Tools used by hairdressers to alter the state of hair are called "hairdresser’s tools." The four major categories into which all hairdressing tools are classified are based on their intended use:

  1. Combing;
  2. Styling;
  3. Curling;
  4. Haircuts.

For the purpose of completeness, we will include a list of accessories required for various procedures at the end of the article. These categories only include tools and devices; accessories like clips and caps are not considered tools.

A few words about the selection before we talk about the list of all hairdressing tools:

  • hairdressing tools must be professional, intended for a specific type of procedure. It is not allowed to use sewing and office scissors, curlers made of unknown materials and other devices intended for home use or not related to hair at all;
  • all tools must withstand treatment with disinfectant solutions, and some categories of tools – scissors, for example, also sterilization. This is a requirement of the Sanitary Law. If disinfection or sterilization is not possible, the instrument can be used only once;
  • the working surface of the instruments must be polished, without nicks and burrs, so as not to damage the scalp and hair shaft of the client;
  • the selected instruments must not react with the products used – masks, shampoos, chemical compositions for curling, dyes;
  • all instruments must have a certificate of conformity.

For combing

Among the combing tools are:

Combs

A comb is an instrument for detangling hair that has teeth fastened to it.

In spite of its obvious definition, combs are used for practically all hairdressing operations, including cutting, coloring, and styling, though not always for the intended purpose. For instance, the master can use a comb to set the level for the next cut while giving a haircut.

Professional combs are separated into:

  • combined – combine teeth of different frequency;
  • uniform – all teeth have the same distance between each other;
  • pointed – with a thin, pointed handle;
  • regular – a simple comb with moderately distant teeth and a wide handle.

Regardless of their degree of expertise, all hairdressers will require:

  • tail comb. Flat comb with a long thin handle and frequent teeth. Used during haircuts, coloring and styling, dividing hair into strands;
  • shading comb. A comb without a handle and combined teeth – frequent and more sparse;
  • comb with a handle and sparse teeth. This is a classic model, designed for delicate combing of hair before and after the procedure;
  • fork comb – has frequent teeth on one side and 2-4 long teeth on the other.

Brushes

A brush is a bristle tool used for smoothing out hairs that are sticking out, massaging the scalp, and carefully untangling hairs. A brush cannot take the place of a comb because of its design, which prevents coloring and cutting with it.

A hairdresser’s essential brush list:

  • brushing – round brush. Used to add volume, curl, dry hair;
  • skeletal – has holes in the working part, due to which the air of the hair dryer passes during hair drying;
  • massage – square, semicircular or rectangular brush for smoothing, untangling hair and massaging the scalp.

Combs and brushes are composed of distinct materials. The best suited for stylists:

Metal brushes and combs are acceptable for procedures that don’t involve the use of makeup or chemical compounds.

For styling

The following tools are used for styling, or reversing the hair’s natural direction:

  • curlers;
  • hair dryers;
  • electric tongs and curling irons.

Curlers

Curlers are cylinder-shaped or conical-shaped plastic or wooden products that are used to curl hair into a variety of diameter curls.

Three varieties of curlers exist:

  • hollow cylindrical with a pressure bar. Curlers are fixed with a special elastic band and bar;
  • hollow cylindrical without a pressure bar. Fixed with hairpins;
  • studded. Do not require additional fixation of hair, but are sometimes fixed with hairpins.

Each of the curlers mentioned above can have a different length, ranging from 5 to 10 cm, and a different diameter, ranging from 1 to 5 cm. The desired curling outcome determines which size is best.

Hair dryer

Because of the airflow it provides, a hair dryer is an electrical device used for drying and styling hair. Hair dryers vary in terms of their ionization function, design, power, and availability of various modes.

Hair dryers are the recommended option for professional use.

  • power – from 1800 W;
  • at least 2 temperature modes – hot and cold;
  • cord length not less than 2.5 m.

Hair can be dried with a concentrator nozzle, styled with additional attachments, and brushed with a comb.

Tongs

Using high temperatures, tongs are an electrical device that modifies the look of hair.

Tongs may be:

  • cylindrical – allow you to create large uniform curls;
  • conical. Have a narrowing closer to the end of the curling iron and help in creating curls with a changing diameter;
  • straight – straightening tongs, which in addition to straightening hair are also used by hairdressers to create light waves.

For curling

Curlers are the only tool used for curling hair. Small items with holes made of plastic or wood, curlers are intended for chemical curling, a long-term hair style.

Curlers vary in diameter, measuring between 3 and 12 mm, and in length, ranging from 6 to 10 cm.

For haircuts

Cutting tools are used for shaving and haircuts in addition to the combs mentioned earlier. Among them are:

  • scissors;
  • razors;
  • hair clippers.

Scissors

The mechanism that powers scissors consists of two cutting halves and a fastening screw that is engaged by shutting the rings.

What are scissors?

  • straight. Used for cutting hair, mustaches, beards. Optimum length is 17-18 mm.
  • toothed or thinning – for thinning hair.

Thinning is the process of spreading out thick hair toward the ends.

Each kind of scissors has an internal classification of its own:

Straight edge scissors:

  • pointed. Have a pointed working tip;
  • with a blunt end. The working tip is beveled, forming a square or semicircle;
  • with a stop. There is a small tail on the ring of the scissors;
  • without a stop – there is no tail, respectively.

Scissors with teeth:

  • one-sided. The teeth are located on one working part;
  • double-sided. Teeths are located on both blades.

Razors

In the hairdressing industry, razors serve many purposes. While they can be used for shaving, cutting, creating edging, and thinning hair, not all razors are made for all of these uses. Every razor is separated into:

  • dangerous. Razors with an open blade for cutting and shaving hair.
  • safe – with a hidden blade.

Within their subspecies, safety razors are further classified as follows:

  • for shaving;
  • for cutting and thinning.

Machines

The knives that are incorporated into the design are moved by machines to cut hair. Two categories of machines exist:

  • mechanical. Actuated by squeezing the movable handle;
  • electric. The movement of the knives occurs automatically when the tool is connected to the electrical network.

These days, hair salons don’t use mechanical machines at all; instead, more useful and convenient electric models have taken their place. Electric ones have various attachments that set a cut limit of 3 to 25 mm for the machine. Additionally, the machine can be used without an attachment; in this instance, it essentially removes the visible portion of the hair, leaving a cut of about 0.3 mm.

Whether you’re a seasoned professional or just getting started, a comprehensive guide to hairdressing tools is a must-have for anyone in the field, covering everything from the simplest comb to specialized papillot. You can ensure you have the necessary tools to create any hairstyle with ease and precision by using this directory, which will assist you in understanding the functions and correct usage of each tool.

Additional accessories

Extra accessories are supplemental items that are required to perform hairdressing procedures and speed up the work process.

Additional tools used by hairdressers are;

  • spray bottle. A water sprayer that allows you to wet only the necessary parts of the hair for further cutting or other manipulations;
  • bowls of different sizes. Used for mixing dyes, masks and other products. The bowl should be made of plastic, since metal ones react with the compositions and accelerate the oxidation process;
  • brushes. Used for applying dyes and other compositions to the hair;
  • clamps. Help to separate, fix and hold the hair during the service. There are metal and plastic ones – metal ones are used only for work without chemicals, plastic ones are universal;
  • shaker. Container for mixing dyes. An optional but very useful device that allows you to quickly achieve uniformity of the composition;

  • dressing gowns, napkins, towels and other linen necessary for work and client comfort;
  • collars. Disposable collars with an adhesive base are used to fix the dressing gown and protect against neck chafing. The collars also prevent moisture, compositions and cut hair from getting under the dressing gown;
  • measuring cups. Used to measure the required amount of a particular product;

  • consumables – gloves, caps for highlighting, applicators, foil, thermal paper.

Since manufacturers constantly release new gadgets, accessories, and work-facilitating items, the list of extra accessories could go on forever. Some examples of these items include tool bags and covers for scissors. For everyday work, any hairdresser needs the basic set of items on the list above. All other information is optional but occasionally helpful.
