The path to the beauty industry
In 1928, Shu Uemura was born in Tokyo. He had always wanted to perform in a theater. However, since the boy was plagued by health issues, there was no discussion of an acting career. The parents were somewhat interested in the issues surrounding their son’s creative realization because their primary concern was curing their son.
The young man enrolled in the Tokyo Academy of Beauty and Hairdressing after he had recovered from his illness. During his rehabilitation, he had the notion to refocus his search for himself. It was no accident that he took this route: Uemura wanted to work behind the scenes in the film and theater industries, if not on stage or the big screen. And that’s what he did.
Out of the 130 students at the academy, he was the only young man. Uemura’s classmates grinned at his efforts. In the meantime, fate was setting up an opportunity for him, which he did not miss. The director of the academy was contacted by the producer of the late 1950s Japanese film "Joe Butterfly" because they needed an English-speaking assistant makeup artist for the set. Uemura satiated every prerequisite; the young man’s diligence was well-known.
His time spent with the film crew provided him with the chance to hone his makeup artistry through training. He handled his responsibilities so well that he was soon in Hollywood. He was still an assistant at first. A fortuitous event enabled him to emerge from the shadows. Uemura had to step in for a sick makeup artist on the set of "My Geisha" in order to transform actress Shirley MacLaine into a geisha.
Professionals in Hollywood were talking about the young makeup artist because of how amazing the transformation was. He was no longer asked to assist film crews, but rather was invited more frequently.
The beginning of Shu Uemura
Uemura desired more even though he was invited to work on big projects in Hollywood with big-name celebrities.
After returning to Japan in 1965, he used all of his experience to open a makeup school under his own name. Here, he imparted to the students the skill of using makeup to create images. However, things don’t end there. Uemura began producing his own goods as early as 1968. This was the beginning of the Shu Uemura company, which was first known as Japan Make-up Inc. before gaining the name of its founder in 76.
Neither foundation nor mascara nor lipstick was the product that launched the Shu Uemura narrative. Uemura made her debut with oil, which took care of the skin while also cleansing it.
The maestro’s interest in skin care products was not an accident. His experiences in Hollywood helped him to realize that using makeup to cover up flaws is not always the best solution. He witnessed the burden makeup causes the skin and the difficulty in removing it. And he recalled the tips from Elizabeth Taylor and other celebrities who used oil to take off makeup.
This is how Unmask cleansing oil, the brand’s debut product, looked. It was an incredible product—when the oil texture came into contact with water, it turned into an emulsion and began to foam a little bit, which helped to gently and successfully remove makeup and cleanse the skin in general.
