What a brush consists of

A brush is a manicure tool used for applying paints, varnishes, and decorative elements to nails in order to paint, shape, and decorate them.

There are three components to every brush:

  • Handle. Usually made of high-quality, durable and pleasant to the touch polymer material or wood.
  • Clamping ring, clip or cartridge – a metal holder that attaches the hair bundle to the handle and securely fixes it.
  • Bundle – collecting hairs into one solid dome.

Classification, types

Manicure brushes are categorized using a number of criteria.

The material that the tools are made of is the first criterion.

  • Natural. Natural bristles have a porous structure, with a cuticular layer. Such a brush holds the material on itself longer and releases it onto the drawing more slowly, so it is more convenient to use such brushes to paint watercolors, shade, apply shadows, just calmly and slowly paint. Are the most expensive, but quickly deteriorate due to acetone-based products.
  • Synthetic or nylon. Synthetics have smooth bristles, i.e. each individual bristle is smooth. When we paint with a synthetic brush, the material quickly flows from it onto the nail plate and leaves a mark, so for gel paint we take synthetics, which can quickly draw lines, pattern elements.
  • Mixed. The dome of the brush contains natural and synthetic bristles.

The thickness of the bristles in the dome is the next crucial factor.

  • To create a three-dimensional pattern and large elements, you need a thick brush.
  • For delicate lines, patterns, you need the thinnest brush.

Depending on the bristle thickness, they are numbered. The brush gets thicker as the number increases. The thinnest tools have the designations 0, 00, 000, which stands for hair or ultra-thin, and the number 8 denotes the thickest or widest tools.

Every brush needs to be labeled with the bristle and material thickness.

Another way to separate brushes is by function:

  • For varnish. They are much more convenient to apply nail polish with than the brush that comes with the bottle. You can choose the thickness and length of the bunch yourself.
  • For acrylic. A tool with hard bristles of a rounded shape and a pointed end. It is with its help that acrylic powder is laid out.
  • For gel. Brushes with a square or rectangular dome shape, flat, with hard bristles. The combination of these factors makes it convenient to work with biogel when covering the nail plates and easily model nails from viscous gel during the extension process.
  • For nail design – nail art, painting. Intended for drawing patterns, sculpting volumetric decor, artistic painting.

The dome’s shape is the next element that influences the decision. Brushes come in a few primary varieties, each with a distinct purpose.

Liner, Stripper or hair. A brush with a thin, no more than 2 mm, bunch of bristles, usually 2-3 cm long. The tool is intended for drawing details of a lace pattern, geometry, filigree curls, long lines that can be drawn continuously due to the total length of the bristles. To work with such a brush, skill is required, and it is customary to use it for working with acrylic paints and gel polishes.

  • Pointed. A device for performing the smallest details of nail art. The smallest brush, from 000 to 2 in size, the shape of the dome is similar to a peak, which makes it convenient for working with small elements of the design. Only the tip of the brush is dipped in paint and when working, it must be held strictly vertically to the nail surface.

  • Fan-shaped or fan-shaped. It got its name due to its appearance – the bristles diverge in a semicircle. An indispensable device for creating original decor. With this brush you can evenly sprinkle glitter on your nails, apply glitter, shade the design, create a “blurred” background. Very often, a fan-shaped tool is used to create ombre and gradient manicure on your nails.

  • Petal. A flat dome narrowed towards the end, reminiscent of a petal. With certain skills, this one manicure tool can replace two other brushes, a dotted and beveled one, because this brush can draw complex patterns, openwork waves, even apply glitter. But most often it is used to create Chinese painting with plant ornaments.
  • Flat or wide. If you are a beginner, it is better to start practicing the technique and skills with this brush. It is much easier to work with it than with a round bone. The wide active working surface of the bundle allows you to evenly apply varnish to your nails, as well as pick up several colors at the same time, thereby creating an interesting and complex pattern. It is also used to create a gradient, ombre or other interesting nail designs.

  • Dagger-shaped or beveled. This tool has a flat dome cut at an angle of 45 degrees. This shape allows you to draw the same elements of decorative manicure, create both volumetric drawings and thin patterns, as well as lines along the diagonal of the nail plate. It is convenient to use such a brush to do a French manicure, as well as to select several shades and apply complex decor.
  • Dots is a tool made of plastic or wood, at both ends of which there are balls that differ in diameter. To some extent, dots are related to brushes, because with its help you can draw both simple dot patterns and create Gzhel painting on your nails. If you choose the right diameters of the balls, you can replace the liner and dot brush.

  • Rounded. Resembles a wide brush, but the edges of the bristles have a rounded shape. Tools with this dome shape vary in bristle length.
  • With short bristles. Convenient for drawing floral and plant patterns, because one print already gives a petal of an ideal shape.

  • With medium bristles. Very convenient for applying varnish to the entire nail surface, modeling and making patterns of varying complexity, filling the background.

  • Brush for French manicure. You can find on the shelves an invention of manicure accessories manufacturers – a brush whose dome has an arched shape. With its help, it is easy to draw the perfect "smile line" in a French manicure.

  • Figured. Such brushes are intended for nail design – creating a manicure with flowers, gradient or ombre. The edge of the curly brushes can be any – torn, divided into 2-3 parts with rounding or narrowing. These brushes are not necessary – all their functions can be replaced by the above-mentioned varieties, but if you often paint on your nails, they will help to facilitate and speed up the process.

  • Silicone brushes or shapers. Instead of a dome made of bristles, such tools have silicone tips, the shape of which can be very diverse. Shapers have an important advantage – varnishes do not flow on them, which makes it easier to create patterns. And they are also more durable than brushes with bristles.

For painting

Three fundamental tools are ideal for starting your collection: point, flat, and rounded brushes. They can assist you with all the fundamental steps involved in making beautiful nail art.

Naturally, natural hair brushes work best for drawing, but start with synthetic brushes. Paints and varnishes do not absorb or flow on it. Once you have mastered the technique, go on to using professional-grade natural bristle tools, which last longer.

For working with gel polish

It is possible to use natural or synthetic hair for the brush dome. The key is that the bunch is elastic and hard, so you can model the nail’s shape using viscous and viscous gel without having to worry about unevenness.

Since the material does not cling to the smooth villi, using synthetics is obviously much more convenient. However, everything is unique and based on aptitude and experience.

Tips for choosing

  • You do not need to buy all types of brushes at once. Buy new tools as you master the existing ones.
  • It is better to start working with synthetics, because such brushes are cheaper than natural ones, they are not so bad to spoil during practice.
  • Do not buy a brush based only on a photo. You must hold the tool in your hands.
  • The shorter the handle on the brush, the more comfortable it is to work with.
  • The chuck must be securely fastened to the brush handle, otherwise you will not be able to work with such a tool confidently and efficiently.
  • After purchasing a brush, be sure to check that all the bristles are even and do not stick out of the dome. Of course, no one will allow you to do this when buying. But a possible problem can be easily dealt with. To do this, twist the brush, resting the dome with the base on some surface. If there are defects, you will notice them immediately. Carefully cut the “wrong” bristles at the base with scissors.
  • Knead the bristles with your fingers and wipe them thoroughly with a lint-free damp cloth. This is done in order to remove the special coating from the surface. Absolutely all new brushes have it. Then rinse the brush in warm water and dry it.

Proper care

You can extend the life of your manicure tools with bristles by following a few easy tips.

  • The dome of the brush should be washed in cool or warm water along the location of the villi, carefully sorting them with your fingers.
  • When working with acrylic, it is recommended to wash the dome after each stroke. Acrylic paint can quickly dry on the bristles and prevent you from making a neat pattern. Further removal of dried acrylic using acetone-containing liquids leads to damage to the bristles.
  • It is forbidden to keep the tool in water for a long time. This, of course, helps remove paint residues, but leads to damage to the device. Rinse the bristles thoroughly and put them away to dry.
  • If the brush has fluffed up a little, the dome has lost its original shape, hold the bunch of bristles in hot water for two minutes, and then dry it.
  • The tool can be used after it has completely dried, otherwise there will be problems during the manicure.
  • After finishing all decorative work, the bristles of the tool must be washed in a special agent that removes all excess working materials. Also, the dome can be cleaned of the remains of varnish and paint using a base applied to a palette, thoroughly fragmenting in it.
  • No special disinfection of brushes is carried out, because after interaction with the working material, as well as with means for its removal, no allergens or other particles remain in the bristles.
  • After drying, it is better to lubricate the bristles with nail oil or cuticle oil. This is recommended for devices with natural bristles.
  • If you use a palette for mixing pigments, then make sure that its surface is smooth, without roughness. This will prevent damage to the bristles.

Storage rules

  • Brushes should be stored strictly in a vertical position, with the bristles up. In this case, the bristles must dry out. It is not recommended to place wet tools vertically, otherwise they will fluff up.
  • It is advisable to store brushes in a special case or cover, which will protect them from fading and significantly extend their service life.
