What is pyrophoresis
Pyrophoresis is the English term. A fire cut is a salon procedure whereby hair strands are treated with open flames in an attempt to improve the appearance of the hair. The process is referred to as "fire cutting," "fire haircut," and other comparable combinations in a number of hair salon and beauty salon price lists.
The first person in Russia to work with hair that was exposed to flames was Olga Kurbanova, who went on to patent the technique and start instructing professionals across the nation in its use.
Outside of the Russian Federation, there is a method for burning hair with fire that goes by the name of velatherapy.
Velatherapy is a Brazilian technique that involves using candle fire to burn hair that has been twisted into bundles.
Pyrophoresis differs primarily from the Brazilian method in that it is applied to loose, straight strands without twisting them. Additionally, pyrophoresis uses a cotton wool "torch" wrapped around the edge of scissors rather than a candle.
It is recommended to use the pyrophoresis method for:
- Removing split ends;
- Improving the appearance of hair – they are smoothed out, become soft and shiny;
- Sealing the ends to prevent further splitting;
- Improving the appearance of the hairstyle and eliminating "sick" hair;
- Visual increase in density due to filling the hair shaft with active substances. As a result, the diameter of the hair shaft can increase by 30%;
- Accelerating hair growth. Under the influence of high temperatures, the preparations penetrate, including, into the hair bulb, saturating the hair root with useful components and enhancing its growth;
- Relaxation. Pyrophoresis is a spa procedure. The warmth of an open fire relieves headaches, improves well-being, neutralizes stress.
The outcomes mentioned above can be obtained with both an open flame and unique cocktails made with ingredients from the French company La Biosthétique. Under the influence of high temperature, the composition’s active ingredients enter the deepest layers of the hair shaft and seal there, promoting restoration and giving the hair its elastic, soft, and glossy appearance.
Pyrophoresis and hot scissors haircut
While pyrophoresis and hot scissors haircut are often considered safer alternatives, they are two entirely different processes. The treatment area is the primary distinction. While firefiring enables you to work with the entire length of the hair, hot scissors can remove split ends and seal hairs only at the ends.
Benefits of hair pyrophoresis:
- Instant result – after the first procedure you will see how your hair has been transformed;
- Improves the condition of hair shafts – both inside and out;
- The length and shape of the haircut do not change – the effect is only on protruding hairs that do not participate in the formation of the contours of the hairstyle;
- Work with the entire length, that is, the ability to eliminate even deep split ends along the entire length.
There are additional drawbacks to using fire to cut hair:
- Few masters. The technology has existed for several years, but not many hairdressers have decided to undergo training. This means that it is not easy to find a qualified master;
- Potential danger. The procedure is safe, but if you fall into the hands of an incompetent master, there is a high risk of severely damaging or even burning your hair;
- High price. Pyrophoresis in Moscow, depending on the length of the hair, can cost from 2,500 to 6,000 rubles. In other regions, the price is lower, but not significantly.
How hair burning is carried out
Pyrophoresis is nothing to be afraid of, as we have stated. The likelihood of a hair fire or other unfavorable outcomes is usually negligible if you have selected a reputable master who has received extensive training in the method.
The following supplies and equipment are required to complete the procedure:
- Shampoo for hair type;
- Sprays, masks and serums for hair type;
- Special elongated scissors;
- Cotton wool to create a “torch” on the tip of the scissors;
- Fire source – lighter, candle.
The editors of Nails Magazine caution against performing the procedure alone at home, even with all the equipment and supplies required.
There are five stages to the procedure:
- Cleansing. At the first stage, the hair is washed with shampoo to remove sebum and dirt particles. If you do not wash your hair before the procedure, the protruding hairs will be smoothed out by sebum and the effectiveness of the procedure will decrease;
- Hardening. A contrast shower is carried out for the hair, which “hardens” the hair shafts and prepares them for the subsequent stages;
- Saturation. Cosmetics with active components in the composition are distributed along the entire length. Sprays, cocktails and masks are selected by the hairdresser based on the hair type and the needs of the hair shafts. These can be moisturizing products, products for enhanced nutrition, as well as protective preparations;
- Burning. At the fourth stage, the wet and specially treated hair is burned with fire. The hairdresser runs a fire "torch" along the strands one by one, burning dry and damaged hair;

Depending on the hairdresser, the length, and the condition of the hair, the procedure can take anywhere from 40 minutes to two hours.
To extend the effect, it is advised to review the care following the procedure:
- Choose high-quality shampoo and conditioner that will not dry out the hair;
- Include leave-in products in the care – sprays, conditioners, balms, to prevent the re-formation of split ends;
- Support the body from the inside and improve nutrition – add more vitamins for hair, as well as drink enough liquid and try to lead a healthy lifestyle.
After three to six months, repeated burning will be necessary. Repetition of sessions beyond every two months is not advised.
A reminder to the client before the procedure
- The hair burning technology is patented by Olga Kurbanova, so only she can teach it – check the master"s certificate for Olga"s signature. Any other courses are fake and do not guarantee the safety of the procedure;
- Pyrophoresis products must be of the French brand La Biosthétique – all of them have been tested for compatibility with fire, and have also proven their effectiveness in improving hair quality. Other products have not been tested, and independent experiments by hairdressers can lead to unpredictable results;
- Open fire treatment is a painless procedure. If you feel pain during the burning process, this is a sign that something is going wrong;
- During the burning of hair, a burning smell may be felt – this is normal. This is what burnt lifeless ends smell like;
- Pyrophoresis is not recommended as an independent procedure. The best option is to burn your hair with fire immediately after cutting or dyeing.
Pyrophoresis cannot be performed at home; all manipulations need to be done with close attention to technology and under the guidance of a qualified expert. Find a licensed master in your city to avoid jeopardizing the beauty of your hair.
Information for masters: training
The only person who teaches pyrophoresis courses is Olga Kurbanova. The seminar is open to the following individuals:
- Hairdressers;
- Stylists;
- Designers and fashion designers.
A minimum of two years of work experience is a prerequisite for students.
There are various formats for training. A seminar is the shortest and easiest. It consists of a theoretical block and a demonstration, lasting eight academic hours.
Program:
- Psychology of working with fire;
- Setting the master"s hand;
- Working with VIP clients;
- Hair care to improve its quality.
Finally, the instructor does a burning demonstration on a model. Additionally, there is a course that offers both individual and practical training for the technology. After finishing, the student receives a certificate from the state that Olga has signed. The next training session’s schedule, price, and dates are listed on the official Fire Cut Instagram page, @firecut_officially.
Questions
Two million rubles and beyond. There is cause for concern if the price is less than this mark. It’s possible that the master is "getting his hand in" or using cheap, unproven meds because he recently finished training.
Does burning hair have any contraindications?
The procedure has no approved list of contraindications.
Probably not, with the exception of the velatherapy and hot-scissor haircuts already mentioned. Some sources advise using a very hot iron instead of an open flame to comb through hair that has been oiled or treated with another product, but this can seriously damage the hair’s quality.
