What does participation in competitions give to a manicurist – an interview with a prize winner

For a lot of manicurists, honing their art is an ongoing process that frequently takes place outside of the salon. Contests provide a special chance to demonstrate abilities, receive recognition, and explore creative limits. However, what specific benefits can attending these events offer to a professional’s career?

In this piece, we discuss the true advantages of competing over a meal with a prize-winning manicurist. We learn how these experiences can elevate and shape a career in unexpected ways, from boosting confidence to creating new opportunities in the field.

Whether you’re thinking about competing for the first time or are just interested in learning what it takes to be successful, this interview offers insightful advice from someone who has been there and done it. Together, we will explore the realm of competitive nail art and explore the benefits that accompany it.

Interview

To facilitate the discussion, could we first define what a nail art championship is?

A nail art championship is a contest for masters who can and want to demonstrate their nail aesthetic skills and who are self-assured. The top masters attend the championship, but there is grading within, which enables you to level the playing field and bring together masters with similar skill levels.

There are several divisions, including debut and masters, which are for competitors who are competing for the first time. Specialists have the opportunity to compete in additional categories in later championships:

  • master;
  • master instructor;
  • pro;
  • VIP.

To climb this ladder, you must, of course, acquire new skills, enhance your work, and generally become better.

They were conducted offline until 2020, but because the pandemic affected every aspect of life, including nail art championships, the organizers decided to move to an online format. Now that things are getting back to normal and championships are starting up again, it is far more exciting to take part in an actual, live competition.

What benefits do offline competitions offer, then? Fundamentally, though, the details remain the same: masters exhibit their creations, engage in competition, and are awarded prizes.

Offline championships are actually a lot of fun. The location of the event is where the greatest masters congregate. This is your opportunity to network, learn new skills, and share your knowledge.

There are also judges present, who are true professionals with TOP expertise in nail care. They converse with them and pose inquiries. They are delighted to speak with the competitors. It resembles a master’s camp.

Online, everything is much easier. Work is submitted in the form of a 15-second video and a photo, and communication occurs via social networks. There are benefits to the online format, though. For instance, a large number of competitors participated in remote championships despite being unable to attend offline ones. There’s always competition to inspire and stimulate.

What is the entry fee for a championship, and are there any con artists?

You must first realize that participation is always compensated. Typically, the cost has no upper limit and begins at 5,000 rubles. For instance, the cost to judge at the Nail-Art World Championship in Australia, where I was invited to represent Russia, was 300 euros, or roughly 26,500 rubles. (Note: Ed.) The cash awards were respectable, though: 300 euros for third place, 1000 for second, and 1500 for third.

You may lose money on preparation rather than the competition itself or the membership fee. Finding a qualified instructor who will help you succeed in the competition and not waste your money is crucial.

I discovered an artistic painting instructor on tips when I was getting ready for my first competition. I started by purchasing a general design course, and after learning that the author is a professional, I purchased a course specifically meant to get me ready for the championship. Along with the teacher, I prepared an entry for a competition and selected one in which I could take part.

And is a teacher’s involvement required? Without a mentor, you can’t just show up to a competition by yourself?

In theory, you could certainly do so, but it’s challenging when you don’t know anything about this field, how to look for competitions, or how to deal with rules. A mentor assists you in determining this, evaluating your skills, and recognizing and addressing your "weaknesses." You compete in future events without a teacher.

Tell us more about your involvement in the World Championship as a judge, including how you were added to the panel of judges.

An invitation to compete in the international championship in Barcelona marked the beginning of it all. I had to place in the top 5 there. I qualified for the World Championship as a judge by placing in the top five and earning a judge’s diploma.

Going back to the subject of competitions, how do things always work out? What is the master doing in the preparatory and subsequent stages in what order?

  1. Getting to know the regulations. You need to request the regulations or find out where to get them from the chief judge of the competition. I wrote on social networks, messengers;
  2. After getting to know the regulations and understanding that the upcoming competition is right for you, and you are right for it – preparing work for the selected nomination;
  3. Payment of the entry fee;
  4. Filling out and sending the questionnaire, as well as photos and videos of the work.

It is crucial that everything be done precisely in accordance with the rules.

Is the work sent ahead of time? You don’t have to show off anything at the location?

Everything is contingent upon the nomination and competition. I took part in art painting competitions, which necessitate extensive preparation. We prepare and send the works ahead of time because, of course, no one will wait until we create designs at the competition site.

However, some nominations require you to demonstrate your skills live on the platform, such as coating, manicure cleanliness, and salon design. In these instances, the answer is yes—the masters show up at the competition site and finish the work within the allocated time.

Which tournaments are the greatest in Russia and the world, in your opinion?

Russian: World Championship; International: Nail Olimp and ABIP. It will take place in Australia starting on May 1st this year.

Take note:

  • ABIP – Association of Beauty Industry Professionals, APIC – a public organization designed to unite the best masters of the beauty industry, as well as to represent their interests at the state level. Is the organizer, sponsor and mediator of the Championships of Russia, World, Europe;
  • Nail Olimp is an international forum of nail service, held in Moscow.

What awards are given to contestants and winners?

Certificates, diplomas, medals, and cups are given out for first place. Certain competitions offer gifts from sponsors, such as product sets and cash prizes.

In your opinion, what is the most important thing for a contestant?

I can list a few benefits that I personally received from participating:

  1. First, of course, improved quality of work, increased speed;
  2. You can see growth, professional development – this helps not to burn out, to strive for further development;
  3. Awards are pride in yourself, and also an excellent demonstration of your professionalism to clients;
  4. New acquaintances – new acquaintances and connections appear at competitions all over the world.

Plus, the more reputable and professional the master is, the easier it will be for him to charge more for his services. You have advanced beyond the status of a mere manicurist to become the winner of an international competition or a Russian championship!

Do new opportunities arise as a result of competing?

Of course, they need just as much work as development that doesn’t involve competitions. Once you are comfortable with the entire "kitchen" of championships, including their structure and regulations, you can begin instructing and getting manicurists ready for competition. You can start a studio, a salon, or even an entire chain.

If this isn’t something you’re interested in, you can develop your abilities and compete in more advanced categories, each of which shows your advancement as a specialist.

Victoria, I appreciate your candid and thorough responses. I’m wishing you more success and triumphs!
