What is hot hair extension, what types are there

A common and efficient way to add length and volume to your hair is with hot hair extensions. Hot hair extensions use heat to fuse the extensions to your natural hair, in contrast to traditional extensions that use clips or tapes. You can achieve a more natural look and feel with this technique because the bonds fit in perfectly with your natural hair.

Hot hair extensions come in a variety of forms, each with a special methodology. The two most popular techniques are pre-bonded extensions, which are applied using heat to melt the bond, and fusion extensions, which use an adhesive based on keratin. Selecting the ideal option for your hair type and lifestyle can be made easier if you are aware of the various types.

Hot hair extensions provide a flexible option for anyone seeking a short-term or long-term makeover. You can confidently achieve the look you want and make an informed decision by becoming knowledgeable about the various types and how they operate.

What is Hot Hair Extension? Hot hair extension is a method of adding length and volume to your hair using heated tools to attach extension strands to your natural hair. It involves melting a special adhesive that bonds the extensions to your hair.
Types of Hot Hair Extensions 1. Keratin Bonds: Uses keratin glue to bond extensions to natural hair. Known for its strong, durable hold.2. U-Tip Extensions: Extensions are shaped like a U at the tip, which is melted with a heating tool for attachment.3. I-Tip Extensions: Similar to U-Tip but with a straight tip. Attached using a heating tool or microbeads.4. Fusion Extensions: Pre-tipped extensions that are fused with natural hair using a heat tool.

What is hot extension and its types

Hot extensions use tiny donor strands adhered to keratin or keratin resin to add length or thickness to natural hair. Given that a tiny, spherical keratin capsule forms at the attachment site during the process, hot extension is synonymous with capsule techniques.

Numerous misconceptions regarding hot extension cause girls to decline the procedure. The most prevalent one is that hot extensions "kill" hair, causing it to break, fall out, and become weak and thin. Naturally, all feedback, whether related to hot extensions or not, is welcome.

But it’s crucial to realize that the outcome of the extension and the repercussions for the girl afterwards are directly tied to the master’s professionalism and technological compliance; if the specialist performed everything as instructed, there shouldn’t be much harm from a hot extension.

It goes without saying that there are benefits and drawbacks to hot extensions.

Advantages:

  • Possibility of combining lengths and shades. Since the hair is attached strand by strand, in small parts, it is possible to use several shades of hair in the hairstyle, as well as combine their length, creating a cascade, ladder or fox tail;
  • Long-term results. It takes 2-4 months before correction, which is more than with the same tape technique;
  • Reliable fixation. The fixed keratin capsule holds well, and the donor strand falls off only under strong mechanical impact.

Cons:

  • Thermal impact. With hot extensions, the hair is exposed to high temperatures, which negatively affects the structure of the rods. Of course, such an impact is incomparable with the daily use of curling irons, irons and other devices, but there are still some consequences;
  • Procedure time. Capsule extension is a long procedure, since the work is carried out with thin, small strands. On average, depending on the thickness of the hair, the procedure takes from 3 to 6 hours;
  • The result directly depends on the experience of the master. Of course, professionalism is important in any procedure – manicure, pedicure, different extension techniques, but it is especially important to choose a real professional in his field when using hot extensions, otherwise there is a high risk of encountering deterioration in the quality of the hair shafts and a disappointing result;
  • Restrictions in care. Since the composition of the capsules is subject to changes under the influence of high temperatures, it is not recommended to use irons, curling irons, or visit baths and saunas too often. Of course, donor strands will not fall off after one straightening, but the strength of the capsules will become less each time. We will tell you more about care in the corresponding section at the end.

Two technologies are used for hot extensions:

  1. English;
  2. Italian.

Microcapsule extensions are a different kind that involve using strands and instruments from a smaller section. After that, we will examine the characteristics of the methods and explain the English and Italian processes to you.

English extensions

A forgotten, infrequently used technique is the English hair extension technique, also known as gun extension. The idea to use this technology for hair attachment was first proposed by British hairdresser Simon Forbes. Then, the man created a unique adhesive mixture that allowed artificial strands to be adhered to natural ones.

The process makes use of the following:

  • Resin for extensions – produced in the form of sticks with a diameter of about 5 mm;

  • Glue gun – no different in appearance and operating principle from a glue gun for hand-made;

  • Donor hair in the amount that a particular girl needs.

How the process of an English extension is executed:

  1. The master puts glue resin into the gun and plugs it into the network;
  2. A small strand is separated from the entire volume of donor hair, applied to natural hair with an indent from the roots;
  3. A small drop of glue is applied from a gun to the junction of natural and donor hair;
  4. The strands are glued together with fingers and a small round capsule is formed;
  5. The entire head is extended according to this scheme.

In order to minimize the visibility of the attachment points, the resin used for the extension is chosen to complement the client’s hair color. Nevertheless, the English method is essentially no longer employed due to:

  • It takes a lot of time – much more than attaching pre-encapsulated strands;
  • It requires increased accuracy – you only have to jerk your hand, and there will be a large drop of glue. Forming even, neat and identical capsules with this technology is also not an easy task.

Since the resin is heated outside of the natural strand and then transferred to the curls, this method has an advantage over the Italian technique in that the hair is not directly thermally affected.

Italian hair extensions

The Italian technique is a popular and modern hair extension method that involves heating the donor strand’s adhesive composition using special tongs and then adhering it to the natural strands.

Italian extensions are made with pre-encapsulated strands. Encapsulation is the process by which keratin is joined to tiny hair strands that are 4-6 mm wide.

How hot extensions are applied in Italy:

  1. The client"s hair is cleaned of sebum, residues of styling products and other contaminants. Ideally, before the procedure, wash your hair with deep cleansing shampoo – this will ensure a strong adhesion of keratin to natural hair shafts;
  2. The master divides the head into zones – the extension starts from the back of the head. A small strand is separated from the total mass of natural curls with an indentation of 2 cm from the hairline. An artificial encapsulated strand is placed with an indent from the root of 0.7-10 mm and warmed up with special tongs. As a result of exposure to temperatures from 90 to 180 degrees, the keratin part softens, which allows natural and donor hair to join. Keratin is rolled into a small round capsule manually or with special tongs;
  3. The entire head is extended using the same scheme. Lastly, hair is extended in the temporal zone.

A few words about microcapsule extension are provided here. Although it is essentially the same Italian extension, it is typically distinguished as a different technology because it uses smaller, encapsulated strands—roughly 2-3 mm—which are more expensive but produce a more natural-looking result and hide the attachment point.

Using the same Italian technology, nanocapsule extension is another option; these are even smaller strands.

Correction of hot extension

Correction is a necessary step in the hair extension process, regardless of whether you use hot, tape, or another technique. After two to four months, girls who have had hot extensions should get their hair corrected; the precise timing will depend on how quickly your hair grows.

There are two reasons why correction is required:

  1. As the hair grows, the capsules become more obvious – they become visible in the thick of the curls, especially when the air moves;
  2. Shifted strands increase the load on the hair follicle, which leads to hair loss.

The girls most likely to experience the so-called consequences of extensions—abundant hair loss, fragility, and deterioration in the quality of the hair shafts—are those who do not adhere to the guidelines for caring for their hair extensions and do not seek prompt correction.

How is the correction of hot extensions carried out?

  • A special alcohol-based composition is applied to the capsules, which softens the keratin a little;

  • With the help of special tongs, the capsule is broken and carefully pulled off the natural strand;
  • The girl"s hair is washed with shampoo for high-quality cleansing, and the capsules are recapsulated – part of the strand with the old capsule is cut off, a keratin granule is captured and melted with tongs and transferred to a strand of donor hair. In this way, the old strand acquires a new keratin bond;
  • After recapsulation of all the strands, they are extended again.

Recapsulation happens differently during the correction process in various salons and with various masters. To calmly prepare the strands for re-extension, some recapsulate the strands immediately and reattach them, while someone else takes the girl’s donor hair and schedules her for the following day. Make sure you explain how a particular master operates.

Hair care after hot extensions

  • After extensions, on the first day, it is not recommended to comb the extended hair, and for two days you should refrain from washing it;
  • Before washing, it is better to comb the hair to prevent it from tangling;
  • You need to wash your hair standing or sitting, but not lowering your head down. Shampoo is applied only to the root part. It is best to use sulfate-free shampoo, since its composition is softer and less harmful to the integrity of the capsules;
  • Oils, nourishing masks, balms and other "slippery" products are not recommended to be applied to the place where the capsules are attached, as this will worsen the adhesion;
  • After washing, it is not recommended to twist or squeeze the hair randomly. Excess moisture is removed with light, gentle, blotting movements;
  • It is necessary to comb with a comb with natural bristles starting from the ends, gradually moving upwards;

  • Before going to bed, it is recommended to gather your hair in a ponytail or braid to avoid tangling of the strands. Extension specialists also do not recommend sleeping with a wet head;
  • You should not visit baths and saunas so as not to provoke softening and sliding of the capsule under the influence of heat.

Straightening and curling your hair won’t harm it; instead, it will soften the capsules and make them easier to remove. Since the hair at the capsule attachment site will not be dyed, it is preferable to dye before extensions or during correction.

How much hair is needed for extensions

The following factors determine how much hair is needed for hot extensions:

  • Density of natural curls;
  • Desired length;
  • Initial length.

All hairdressers agree that there should be between 100 and 150 strands on average, but this varies greatly. If you want to extend the length of your hair to 40–50 centimeters, which is to the shoulder blades or slightly below, 100–150 strands should be sufficient if your hair is fairly thin.

The following is a rough formula for calculating strands with a standard length of 40–50:

In terms of thickening, the process requires 50 to 100 strands without lengthening them. In order to avoid having a voluminous thick top and thin bottom, more strands are added if the length required is greater than 40–50 cm.

The precise number of strands for extensions will be determined by the master during the consultation prior to the procedure, as the calculation must take into account the unique characteristics of each girl. Please be aware that these are all approximate, conditional calculations.

The computations provided apply to typical 4-6 mm capsules. The number of strands increases by two to three times if you intend to extend microcapsules, but since the strand itself has fewer hairs, the quantity of donor hairs needed will also slightly increase.

You need roughly 100 grams of donor hair for 125–150 standard-sized capsules. You will receive twice as much from the same quantity of microcapsules because they weigh less than usual.

Using heat to fuse the extensions to your natural strands, hot hair extensions are a popular way to add length and volume to your hair. There are various varieties of this technique, including tape-in, pre-bonded, and fusion extensions, each with unique application techniques and advantages. You can select the option that best suits your desired look and hair type by being aware of these options.

Common mistakes in hot hair extensions

  • Using low-quality keratin. Keratin granules that are used for encapsulation and further fixing of strands must be of high quality, since low-quality keratin has a weak bonding ability and wearing hair with it even for 2 months is quite problematic;
  • Poorly melted keratin. When melting the keratin tip of the encapsulated strand, it is important to warm it up well enough so that it becomes uniformly soft and viscous. Otherwise, the adhesion of natural and donor strands will be of poor quality;
  • Too much or too little keratin during encapsulation. If there is not enough adhesive material, donor hair will not hold well, if there is too much, the capsules will be large and very noticeable;
  • Incorrect placement of capsules. Do not place capsules close to the face and the hairline – even if they are not visible during extension, in everyday life the attachment will constantly be exposed;
  • Placing capsules close to the scalp. This is fraught with discomfort during wear, since some hairs will be pulled;
  • Strong cutting of the capsule. When encapsulating, the masters often cut the tip to make it even and slightly reduce the size of the glued part of the strand. With excessive cutting, there is a high probability of some donor hair falling out.

Questions

What caused the hair loss that occurred after the capsule extension?

There are numerous causes for this, ranging from medical issues to negligence. It’s crucial to realize that some hair loss is unavoidable when correcting capsule extensions—not because the process is dangerous, but rather because a healthy individual typically loses 50–100 hairs every day. These hairs fall out from the root of the donor keratin capsule but stay attached to it because a portion of your hair is attached to it. All of the fallen hair rods are released as soon as the capsule is removed, and it appears that the loss is just enormous.

Which type of hair works better for capsule extensions: artificial or natural?

Only natural: they will blend in with natural hair and feel the same to the touch with the appropriate hair color. Furthermore, artificial hair does not always tolerate heat exposure, and natural hair can be styled using thermal tools.

How often should one replace donor hair?

Extended curls typically last one to one and a half years before needing to be replaced. The problem is that the strands shorten and thin out during the correction process, and after four or five corrections, they no longer resemble the original appearance.

Is it feasible to perform hot extensions by yourself at home?

The trickiest to master on your own are the hot extensions. More accurately, they are essentially unachievable. The problem is, even if you’ve done extensions before, you won’t be able to properly and evenly extend the back of your head on your own. You can add thickness to your temples, but you cannot expect to grow longer on your own.

How long hair must be in order to use hot extensions?

The majority of the time, they provide extensions for your own 5–10 cm hair, but some experts also do men’s and women’s short haircuts (2–3 cm).
