Are you considering lash enhancement but don’t know where to begin? Your appearance can be drastically changed with eyelash extensions, but there are a lot of different kinds to choose from. Selecting the style that best fits your needs and preferences is made easier when you are aware of your options.
Eyelash extensions come in a variety of styles, from volume to classic, and each one creates a distinct effect. By affixing one extension to each natural lash, classic extensions create a natural-looking appearance. Conversely, volume extensions use several thin extensions for each natural lash to give the illusion of fuller lashes.
Additionally, there are hybrid extensions that combine volume and classic techniques to create a textured, well-balanced look. Mega volume extensions give dramatic, glamorous lashes with intense fullness and a striking effect for those who want them.

What is eyelash extension. Main classifications
An eyelash extension is the process of applying artificial lashes to natural ones in order to lengthen or increase their volume. It’s interesting to note that natural materials, like sable or mink fur, can also be employed in artificial contexts.
Eyelash extension types are categorized based on multiple factors. We will first provide you with a brief overview of each type, followed by a detailed analysis of their advantages, disadvantages, and characteristics.
Extension zones separate extensions:
- On the upper eyelashes;
- On the lower;
- In the corners.
Additionally, by using attachment technology, into two types:
- Bunch – gluing ready-made bunches of artificial eyelashes;
- Eyelash by eyelash – working with each eyelash.
The development’s characteristics are used to classify the next:
- Frame extensions;
- Book;
- Sequential or lash-to-lash – from English. eyelash after eyelash.
The effect of each type of extension varies as well; this is the outcome that is directly tied to the extension scheme:
- Classic;
- Fox;
- Doll;
- Squirrel;
- Sparse;
- Wet;
- Rays.
Other effects exist as well, such as cocktail and butterfly, but they all stem from the primary effects listed.
Eyelash extensions by attachment point
Extensions are possible:
- In the corners;
- On the lower eyelashes;
- On the upper eyelashes.
In the corners
Artificial fiber is attached from the outer corner to approximately the middle of the eyelid or slightly less when it extends in the corners. Although the process is far quicker than fully extending the upper eyelid, the outcome is just as striking.
Advantages:
- Natural effect;
- Saving both material and time.
Cons:
- Not suitable for girls with sparse and short eyelashes – against the background of the extended corner, the remaining eyelashes will stand out strongly;
- Does not give fluffiness, since not the entire row of eyelashes is subject to work.
On the lower eyelashes
It is uncommon for both clients and masters to have lower lash extensions.
Lower eyelash row extensions are appropriate if:
- You need to correct the shape of the eyes;
- Sparse and light natural eyelashes;
- You want to make the image complete, and the eyes more expressive.
There is no purpose in extending the natural, dark, long lashes on the lower eyelid.
Curls B and C are used to extend the lower eyelashes. Strongly twisted fibers will interfere, so comfort is the primary consideration when making this decision.
Although the length is a personal preference, 3-6 mm eyelashes will look the most natural. Naturally, a variety of lengths are extended rather than just one, following the natural eyelash row’s growth principle.
The fibers on the lower eyelid have a diameter of either 0.05 or 0.07. Eyelashes thicker than 0.07 mm will appear overly synthetic.
Because of physiology, the lower eyelashes are worn sparser than the upper ones. The life cycle of the lower hairs is shorter.
On the upper eyelashes
The most common, widely used, and in-demand kind of eyelid extension is the upper eyelid extension. The technique used will determine whether the fiber is extended on all or just some eyelashes.
The attachment schemes and extension techniques listed in the "Types of extension by effect" section are specifically related to upper eyelid extension.
Types of extension by attachment technology
Based on the quantity of eyelashes that are concurrently affixed to the base of the natural ones, we have already identified two categories of extensions:
- Bundle;
- Plenny.
Buffal building
Puchkovy, also known as the Hollywood building, is the application of pre-made bundles of artificial fibers to the eyelids and surrounding lashes. The amount of hair in buns varies and is based on the outcome that the stylist and his client are hoping to attain.
Advantages:
- Expressive result;
- The speed of the procedure.
Cons:
- Fragility;
- Spoiled appearance – if one bundle disappears, it turns out a noticeable proplesh, which means the whole image deteriorates.
Regrettably, the rapidity of the process is linked not only to the socks but also to the eyelids’ weak skin and bundles of hiring, which results in much worse and faster-falling eyelashes. Bouffle extension works well for quick tasks like attending a wedding or other event, taking pictures, etc.
Bundle extensions are not used by Leschmakers; makeup artists are the only ones who still use this technique.
Plenny
The term "eyelash extensions" says it all—the fibers are affixed to real eyelashes rather than the skin, as they are with bundles.
There are internal variations to eyelash extensions that are mostly related to the material used during the procedure rather than variations in technology:
- Japanese or Indonesian extensions – mink fur is used for the procedure;
- American – rubber or silicone fibers;
- European – the only type of eyelash extensions that differs not in the material, but in the eyelash attachment pattern – they repeat the principle of natural eyelash growth and give a natural, almost imperceptible result.
Benefits of applying eyelash extensions:
- Natural effect;
- Long wearing period – from 2 to 4 weeks;
- Preservation of the result even with the loss of some artificial eyelashes. If several hairs fall off during wear, this will not create the effect of bald spots – the look will remain expressive, and the eyelash edge neat. Of course, this applies to situations when several eyelashes have fallen off, and not half of the total volume.
Cons:
- Weightening. Since each or almost each natural eyelash is processed, the load on them increases as a result of using glue and artificial fiber;
- A possible consequence in the form of natural eyelashes falling out;
Even though the extension is done lash-by-lash, more than one artificial lash may be adhered to each eyelash; the quantity may vary.
The volume will be more expressive the more eyelashes are adhered to the skin:
- 1 to 1, that is, 1 artificial eyelash is attached to one of your own eyelashes – classic volume 1D;
- 1 to 1, 1 to 2 – gluing one and two artificial eyelashes alternately to natural ones – you get one and a half volume, 1.5D;
- 1 to 2 – double, 2D;
- 1 to 3 – triple, 3D;
- 1 to 4 – quadruple, 4D;
- 1 to 5 and more – Hollywood or mega volume, 5D.
Types of extensions in the order of development
The process of attaching synthetic eyelashes to natural ones is known as the order of processing.
There are three ways the lashmaker can secure the fibers:
- Book;
- Frame;
- Sequentially.
The "book" method
The lashes are extended in this instance in a sequential manner, with the harder areas—the inner and outer corners of the eyes—being addressed first, followed by the easier ones—the middle of the eyelash line. The master can extend each eye individually, i.e., fully on one, then the other, or simultaneously, repeating each step on one eye before moving on to the other.
Advantages of the approach:
- Full filling. Since the eyelashes are worked on in order, it is possible to work on each of them;
- Low probability of sticking together.
Cons:
- It is easy to make a mistake with the direction. This happens when the lashmaker starts working from the outer corner and if the direction is violated, all the eyelashes can be tilted towards the ear.
Frame method
The frame method of lash extension involves starting with an artificial eyelash frame and then haphazardly growing in the remaining lashes while keeping in mind the desired effect. The regions where the length changes are initially extended when employing the frame method.
For instance, the image below illustrates how to extend classics.
By using the frame method, the master fills in the spaces between the lashes after extending one at a time, changing its length. It turns out that the frame will have 12 eyelashes if the pattern is as shown in the picture.
Advantages:
- An excellent option for beginners. It is much easier to create a frame and fill it than to navigate the pattern as you go;
- Since the eyelashes are worked on in turn in different areas, the risk of gluing is minimized – the glue has time to dry;
- It is almost impossible to “fail” the direction with this method.
Cons:
- Not all eyelashes are always worked on, since the fibers are extended one by one;
- Violation of symmetry. This happens when the frame on the eyes was initially built differently.
Sequential method
Sequential extension, also known as lash to lash, is an alternate technique in which the artist extends one eye before extending the other. Work starts at the outer corner of the first eyelash in one eye.
Advantages:
- Detailed elaboration allows you to touch each eyelash and avoid gaps.
Cons:
- This method is not suitable for beginners, since transitions are created during the work and there is a high probability of making a mistake;
- It is difficult to work with thick eyelashes in this technique;
- It is easy to get asymmetrical extensions.
Types of extensions by effect
The outcome of the process of bonding artificial eyelashes to natural ones is known as the "effect of extensions." Numerous effects exist, some of which bear celebrity names like Kylie Jenner and Kim Kardashian.
We’ll examine the simplest one first:
- Classic;
- Fox;
- Doll;
- Squirrel;
- Sparse;
- Wet.
Classic
The most popular kind of extension, which has been around for a while and is still relevant. One artificial lash is adhered to one natural lash in the classic full, single volume extension.
Total length, with the longest being no more than 11 mm. chosen according to the length of the natural eyelashes.
Layers: 0.07–0.12. Larger diameter fibers enhance the expressiveness of growing eyelashes, while thin lashes (0.07) create the natural illusion of an open gaze.
Benefits of historic structures
- Natural result. Of course, it turns out to be noticeable, but in comparison with other extension schemes less pronounced;
- Suitable for almost all girls, regardless of the initial condition of the eyelashes and the shape of the eyes.
Period of Noski: 3–4 weeks.
Depending on the experience level of the chosen master and the quality and density of his lashes, the procedure can take one to two and a half hours.
Fox
The fox effect is created by having longer eyelashes in the outer corner of your eyes, which gives you a more playful look. The girl receives an imitation of eyeliner in addition to the previously mentioned effects because longer eyelashes are used on the outer corner.
Length of eyelashes: 6 to 16 mm, depending on the length of natural hairs and the desired expressive effect;
Thickness: In general, a thicker artificial fiber yields a brighter outcome.
Volume, or the quantity of synthetic fibers adhered to the natural lash, can vary. The most typical for foxes is 2D, which involves affixing two synthetic lashes to a single eyelash.
Highlighting the benefits and drawbacks of the fox and all its aftereffects is challenging because everything relies on the fox’s appearance, the intended outcome, and the technique’s accuracy. The "fox" can appear flamboyant and seductive in certain situations, or inappropriate and bulky in others.
Those that the fox effect will not work for, in brief:
- Narrow eyes – the stretching effect of the "fox" will only enhance this feature;
- Lowered outer corners of the eyes – lengthening the eyelashes in this case will not give the effect of playfulness, but on the contrary, will add sadness to the look;
- Deep-set eyes;
- Small eyes.
Extreme fox
The effect of an arrow, or the imitation of eyeliner on the upper eyelid, is hidden beneath such a promising name. The "fox" and the extension scheme are actually very similar, but the eye’s outer corner is stretched more forcefully to give the appearance of eyeliner.
Eyelashes of four to six lengths are used for extension, allowing you to create a smooth transition by progressively extending into an arrow, or an elongated outer corner.
The girls in the categories we mentioned in the previous paragraph—those with small, narrow eyes, drooping outer corners, and deep set—will not look good with this type of eyelash extension.
Doll
The extension of one or nearly one length of eyelashes throughout the entire eyelash row is known as the "doll effect." When creating a doll effect, nearly all of the hairs will be the same length if the master alternates hairs of different lengths with the classic or fox effect, taking into account the features of the technique as well as the length of natural eyelashes.
There are two types of volume: traditional and voluminous. The most popular choices are 2D, 3D, and classic.
0.10 to 0.12 mm in thickness. Since the effect is designed to produce a bright, noticeable result, there’s no use in extending the "doll" with thin eyelashes.
Every individual client’s eyelash length is different. The typical length of eyelashes used in doll extensions is 8 to 13 mm.
Girls should not use the "doll":
- With almond-shaped eyes. Narrow eyes with a doll effect will seem heavy and even narrower;
- With wide-set eyes;
- After 40 – the effect will emphasize wrinkles and drooping of the upper eyelid, if any.
Squirrel
With the aid of synthetic fiber, "brushes" form closer to the outer corner of the eye, giving rise to the squirrel effect in extensions. Since the squirrel effect, unlike the fox effect, does not involve stretching the eye, the eyelashes are again trimmed after the brush form.
Length: 6 to 12 mm; the longest eyelashes are found in the middle of the eyelid, and then they get shorter over time.
You can adjust the volume to your preference, but the 2D effect looks best.
For whom it is inappropriate:
- Large eyes;
- Wide-set eyes;
- Narrow eyes.
However, because the squirrel effect "lifts" the outer corner of the eye, it can help girls whose eyes droop visually.
Sparse
The attachment of synthetic fiber to natural eyelashes that have indentations is known as the sparse effect. Such extension makes the look more natural and expressive, almost like natural.
The client’s preferences determine which volume to use for the extension; it can be single for a barely perceptible effect or more expressive 2 and 3D. Similar circumstances apply to the length, where various combinations ranging from 6 to 13 mm are used.
All girls can benefit from this building up effect, but girls with thick but short cilia will benefit most from it.
Wet
Wet extension, also known as the wet eyelash effect, is an attachment technique rather than a specific material used in the procedure. The key is to immediately submerge the artificial eyelashes in glue and adhere them to the natural ones instead of separating them when transferring them from the tape. Such manipulation gives the impression that the hairs are wet.
A wet effect requires at least two eyelashes; one volume will not produce the desired effect. Five artificial lashes can be placed on top of one natural lash.
When using glue, the eyelashes do not separate, so it is best to avoid using an extension material thicker than 0.10 mm. A thicker fiber increases the likelihood of getting hard, projecting sticks instead of lovely eyelashes. Less thickness is advised the more hairs there are in one gluing.
Rays
This eyelash extension, known as the "Kim effect," alternates between longer and shorter lashes. Consequently, "rays" are spaced equally apart along the lash line.
Typically, there is a 2 mm discrepancy between the main length and the rays. In other words, there will be 10 rays if the main length is 8 mm. This difference results in rays that are expressive without being overly protruding.
Naturally, the client’s needs play a role in the selection of a particular scheme. The same principle is used to select the length, thickness, bend, and volume. You can achieve a more vibrant and striking outcome by coloring the rays instead of making them black; this will result in an intriguing and unique colored eyelash extension.
When choosing an extension, it’s crucial to consider the girl’s unique features, including her lashes and appearance. This will help you choose the right technology, method, and attachment location.

I’ve never had eyelash extensions before, so I’m not sure what would work best for me. My lashes are light, long, and not very thick, so I apply makeup by painting my lower lashes a brighter color.

Hi there, Evgeniya! To make up for the lack of volume in your natural eyelashes, try starting with a 2D extension. A specialist can help you select the best option based on your natural lash type, eye shape, and color type. You can also consult with a specialist.
Selecting the ideal kind of eyelash extensions can greatly improve your appearance and streamline your daily beauty regimen. There is a style that suits you, whether you like a natural look for everyday wear or something more dramatic for special occasions. While volume extensions add multiple fine lashes to each of your natural lashes to create a fuller, more glamorous effect, classic extensions offer a subtle, single lash enhancement that mimics your natural lashes.
Hybrid extensions combine aspects of volume and classic techniques to create a well-balanced look that is both subtle and voluminous, ideal for those who want the best of both worlds. Mega volume extensions, on the other hand, can give you an extremely dramatic look with their extreme fullness and length if you like to make bold statements.
Keep in mind that the best decision is determined by your lifestyle and sense of style. Choosing the type that best fits your desired look and eye shape can be made easier by speaking with a professional lash technician. Whichever style you decide on, giving your extensions the right upkeep and care will make them look fantastic and last longer.
